Hidden Story of a Mask

November 5, 2018!
United Kingdom
The sky is shiny, fireworks are rising everywhere.

What is celebrated?
What is the sign of these sounds?

Remember, remember

The fifth of November,

Gunpowder treason and plot.

We see no reason. Why gunpowder treason. Should ever be forgot!”

These voices are hidden in this quote of V for Vendetta.
And what does it tell us?
What does the November 5th mean?

What kind of a story is hidden under this mask that we will recognize from Gezi protests, which is the face of the demonstrators, the rebellion and the opponents all over the world?

To find out let’s go to England in the 1600’s.

GUNPOWDER NIGHT

King James

Date: 5 November 1605

Place: UK Parliament Building

For the Aristocracy summit in England, a royal family and statesmen gathered for a big celebration.

However, there will be another incident to remember the date.

In the mid 1500s, England passed through the reform period, the church was tied to the king, and the influence of the clergy on the people and power was reduced. But there is someone who is not happy with this new system.

Guy Fawkes, a Catholic British soldier, and his 12 friends make a great plan that night to finish the current system:

They will blow up the British Parliament building at that night.

Guy Fawkes and his friends

For this reason, they place 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellar under the assembly.

Their aim is to destroy the British parliamentary system that represents the sovereignty of the people, but rather to establish a system in which the Catholic Church is re-dominated.

While the plan is working, something happens unexpectedly. One of the conspirators wants to inform their relatives in the palace about the situation and so the plot arises. Fawkes and his friends are caught in the cellar barrels in the cellar where they hide in the middle of the night. He is executed with his friends.

The event, known as olarak “Gunpowder Plot”, is called one of the most important anarchist action attempts in history.

The prevention of this initiative in the history of England is considered an important milestone and has been celebrated with enthusiasm on November 5 every year as the name of Guy Fawkes Night, Celebration Fire Night, Fireworks Night, Gunpowder Night and Conspiration Night.

So does the freedom fighter V in the film tell the story of Guy Fawkes?

In fact, they are two very different characters whose ideologies are very different, but it is shown in the film that V character is inspired by Guy Fawkes in point of protesting the system.

Remember, remember

The fifth of November,

Gunpowder treason and plot.

We see no reason. Why gunpowder treason. Should ever be forgot!

This quote, in contrast to what is known, is not said by the rebels, but told by the the King which indicates that the insurgents will not be forgotten in a poem.

A movie tells us a story, makes us believe in a story, but the truth is that it’s often untold.

In Latin this is called visibilia ex invisibilibus. It means,
“the visible comes from the invisible”

What are the invisible reflections you see in your life?
